Salinas Swimwear Spring/Summer 2014 Show | Fashion Rio
FashionTV had fun at the Salinas swimwear show during Fashion Rio, where the models were living “la dolce vita” as portrayed by the Italian summer in the movies. References to the 60s were rampant but so was the sexy (and high fashion) swimwear. Stripes and shapes came on tops and bottoms modeled by Carolina Thaler, Daniela Braga, Daiane Conterato and more.

It’s Time For Fashion’s Favorite Week: Paris Haute Couture Fall 2013-14 Shows!

Leave it to the French when it comes to ending the fashion season, because let’s face it -- nothing beats Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week!

Finally, it is upon us: The week where fashion’s most celebrated designers choose the grandest venues to present their super-luxe collections and select the world’s most sought after models to wear them right.

Yes, in just two days’ time Paris bids farewell to the Fall 2013-14 fashion season with the Haute Couture grand finale. And FashionTV will be reporting straight from the Parisian catwalks to bring you all the front-row and backstage coverage, first.

The week will begin on Sunday, with a late night show from Atelier Versace, as is customary to the Haute Couture schedule, where last season, Donatella, pulled-off a gilded collection of gold and garishness for her Spring 2013 showcase.

And then, a bright and early start on Monday for Christophe Josse, who will open the first full day and is followed shortly by fashion prodigy and red carpet favorite Raf Simons of Christian Dior. Then, Dutch designer Iris Van Herpen who has a penchant for mixing science with fashion, will undoubtedly present yet another futuristic collection, before Giambattista Valli closes the day with some authentic Italian glamour.
Day two, and if the world’s fashionistas, top celebs, and biggest bloggers haven’t arrived yet, then they’ll certainly be turning up for the bi-annual Grand Palais Chanel Haute Couture spectacle, where we can expect to see Karl Lagerfeld favorites like Cara Delevingne, Stella Tennant, Kel Markey, Lindsey Wixson, and other top models strutting the catwalk to the beat of his fashion show. Also showing on day two is Kim Kardashian favorite, Stephane Rolland -- we wonder if she’ll be making her first public appearance with baby North West at the show??

And so, the Haute Couture carousel keeps turning, with custom mask maker Maison Martin Margiela opening day three, and the prince of fairytale dresses Elie Saab following shortly after, as well as fashion’s eternal enfant-terrible Jean Paul Gaultier showing the same day. Meanwhile, Viktor&Rolf will be making a big comeback with their first Haute Couture show in over 13 years! Day four will close the week’s offerings with unisex Haute Couture designer Rad Hourani and Zuhair Murad

British fashion's new generation gets the catwalk callup

The British Fashion Council has announced its catwalk sponsorship for spring/summer 2014 and there are some must-see inclusions. Watch out for shoe designer Sophia Webster, Paula Garbese's 1205 label and Marques Almeida

The British Fashion Council has announced the recipients of Newgen sponsorship for spring/summer 2014. Nine names have been chosen – with sponsorship for catwalk shows given to J JS Lee, Lucas Nascimento, Marques'Almeida, Simone Rocha and Sister by Sibling. Milliner Nasir Mazhar and Sophia Webster, who does shoes, will receive presentation sponsorship along with 1205 – a label designed by Paula Garbese. Liam Fahy, a shoe designer from Zimbabwe, will receive exhibition sponsorship for the first time.

This announcement shows both subtle changes and intriguing new additions. Four recipients move from presentation to catwalk – withMarques Almeida, which has become known for its shredded denim and ontrend 90s pop-culture reference bank – particularly exciting. Webster, the ex-Nicholas Kirkwood designer, has charmed the fashion world with her sherbert-coloured shoes, so her second presentation will be a must-see. 1205 is probably the biggest news headline. Garbese launched her label last season after working with tailoring brand Kilgour for five years. It has quickly gained a buzz for its slick take on minimalism. With a Newgen presentation spot now in her hands, it will be interesting to see what she does next.

Newgen, which is sponsored by Topshop, is now in its 20th year and has become known as the home of ones-to-watch in London. The committee is overseen by Sarah Mower, the Ambassador for Emerging Talent for the BFC and contributing editor to American Vogue , and the likes of Alexander McQueen, Antonio Berardi, Erdem and Christopher Kane are alumni. This latest set of designers now has the significant weight of the body behind them.

Hands-free? It's a dilemma

The simplest solution for off-duty hands is to never to buy anything that doesn't possess at least one pocket

Pockets … help for hands. Photograph: Alamy
There's nothing like sorting through a box of old photographs for twanging the middle-aged heartstrings, but "à la recherche du temps perdu" aside it's really interesting to see pictorial evidence of ingrained family traits that have persisted through generations. In my case, both sides of the family seem to have a particular fondness for a sturdy umbrella, a walking stick, a robust handbag or a golf club. Speaking for myself, I am at a loss without some sort of handheld implement or pockets, or even a clipboard. The problem, you see, is what does one do with one's hands when there's nothing for one's hands to do?
I know you've been there too – standing around at a party in a frock woefully devoid of pockets wondering where to put your arms. I tried several tactics in what used to be my day job: pockets (thumbs in or out?*), clutch bag (too easily dropped), folded arms (defensive), hands loosely clasped behind or in front (too royal), finger poised quizzically beneath chin while resting elbow on other arm in a half-fold-chin-prop combo (too pretentious). I have once, in a full-skirted frock, pretended to have pockets by tucking my hands into the folds and gripping a handful of fabric. Why did my mother never tell me what to do with my hands? She told me what not to do with them, which isn't the same thing at all and has left me, 40 years after her death, still expecting a swift tap between the shoulder blades to make me stand up straight, pull my shoulders back and take my hands out of my pockets - Pavlov's puppy in pigtails.
It is one of life's imponderables. My faithful well-thumbed copy ofDebrett's offers no advice and so I resort to what a psychologist would no doubt term "coping strategies". The simplest thing is to never buy anything that doesn't possess at least one pocket. I can affect a suitablefashion-y stance even when I'm 50% short in the pocket department; when 100% pocketed in a skirt, dress or jacket I can elevate that to "nonchalantly cool" and I have somewhere to stash my phone, business cards, a tissue, a pen, spare safety pins and a packet of breath mints. However … under no circumstances should this quantity of stuff be attempted in trouser pockets, which should be kept solely for hands and handkerchiefs. Hands in trouser pockets should also remain still at all times. (This applies especially to gentlemen. You know what I mean.)
A shoulder bag or a cross-body bag is a useful thing and facilitates occasional diversionary hand employment while simultaneously leaving you hands-free for other activities. Clutch bags have a tendency to leap from beneath the arm like a well-oiled mackerel and make holding a canape a very awkward business, especially if you have a glass of wine in the other hand, and I have yet to master them.
It sounds a trivial thing but knowing where to put one's hands, as it were, goes a long way towards alleviating social unease. Perhaps one of our more innovative designers could come up with the modern equivalent of a chatelaine, or some kind of feminine sporran. I know I'd buy one. Until that day I shall remain mired in my quandary and although I aspire to soignée-ness I fear it will forever elude me, which makes me very sad.
*And it's "thumbs out" by the way.

Iceberg SS14 – Milan Fashion Week

Iceberg SS14 Review
Fashion shows are a wordless means of communication. Of course, they are supposed to showcase clothes, accessories and the like to retailers, press and other industry representatives. Yet the fundamental principle of the whole fashion theatre is to create buzz around the brand, get the right people talking about the product and generate excitable word of mouth. Hence, the whole sartorial spectacle: celebrities paid to sit front row and lavish after parties the norm.
More often than not the runway prototypes are subsequently altered to fit commercial requirements. It’s little wonder that the designers quite literally go wild, focusing more on transmitting a vision than the clothes wearability. The Iceberg SS14 show, however, was a welcome change of pace.
Newly appointed creative director Federico Curradi decided to go back to the brand’s roots, starting with a lasting foundation of timeless pieces that fail go out of style.
The show brought together classic must-haves – from the white t-shirt to the biker jacket and chunky knitwear to the perfect parka – all served up with a youthful attitude and a dose of colour. The result? A series of sporty separates in a palette of cobalt blue, tangerine, and olive; found spiced up with the addition of micro-perforations, embroideries and abstract patchwork motifs.
A parade of great outerwear and thickly ribbed sweaters – not really suitable for the steamy Italian summer yet surprisingly perfect for the Londoners who want to stay stylish all year round.
